MarahLago Larimar: The Rare Caribbean Gemstone
It’s amusing, but true, that a trip to the Caribbean for this "Outer Banker” jettisoned me into a superb world of showcasing gemstone jewelry by some of the most renowned jewelry designers.
While on vacation in the Caribbean, I came upon the larimar stone while shopping, as we all love to do when visiting a new place. Something about the stone spoke to me – its color for starters. It was as blue and translucent as the ocean I had come to swim in. But there was more. As I spoke with the shopkeeper, I became charmed by its story…by its formation from fierce volcanic eruptions and the romantic folklore…
Larimar, a rare gem with a mysterious history, exists only in the Dominican Republic. And as the story would tell it, an earthquake dislodged pieces into a river, where they eventually tumbled downstream awaiting to be discovered. One of the early artisans used these small blue pebbles, naming them for his daughter, “Larissa” and the Spanish word for ocean, “Mar.” Local children can still be seen running up and down the shore in search of their own treasures.
Needless to say, I returned to the Outer Banks having purchased a stunning larimar pendant for myself.
Not much time passed that before I began showcasing larimar gemstone jewelry at Beach Treasures in Duck. After all, my customers had been insisting having fallen in love with MY larimar necklace! And on a barrier island -- with the Atlantic to the east and the Currituck Sound right outside our doors – a gemstone like larimar, one evoking the beauty of the ocean is a natural fit.
Marah Lago and I started working together before the brand of MarahLago Larimarwas developed. As I took my journey into jewelry, MarahLago refined her jewelry pieces into the design line that you see today --a premiere jewelry designer creating fashion forward pieces. Whether simple or adorned, every piece of MarahLago Larimar jewelry captivates one of my customers – many of them returning season after season looking for a pair of matching larimar earrings or perhaps a new piece for someone special. The stone itself it naturally beautiful – luminous and cool – and the designs of MarahLago take it one step further capturing the spirit of this rare Caribbean gemstone.
During this time, Beach Treasures in Duck went from offering a limited number of jewelry items at the check out to sixteen cases of jewelry filled with larimar jewelry in addition to semi-precious stones and sterling silver jewelry collections from all around the world.
I invite you to shop the magnificent collection of MarahLago larimar jewelry showcased here at Beach Treasures Online as well as in our shop, Beach Treasures in Duck located exclusively on the Town of Duck’s Boardwalk on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
