Sound about right? Those words are direct from the Pantone Color Institute.
Since the beginning of time, the sea and the sky have inspired us to contemplate eternity and filled us with hope. The expanse of the sky ignites a magical world of dreams, while the majesty of the sea provokes a deep feeling of admiration and respect for its strength.
A riot of blues! Royals and aquas, teals and marines. Sea greens to deep navys…gems and jewels run the spectrum of blue -- the color that symbolizes truth and dependability (think true blue!) and stimulates feelings of calm and expansiveness, just like when we’re at the ocean’s edge or gazing up at our big Carolina Blue sky.
We are naturally drawn to aquatic hues – and it comes as no surprise that the color Classic Blue, a shade reminiscent of the sky at dusk -- was chosen as Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2020. I think it might be fair to say that “blue” (or just about ANY shade of blue) is usually a hands-down favorite here at Beach Treasures in Duck too.
Aquamarine, sapphires, turquoise (in all of its variations), opalite, larimar, and sparkling crystals shine and shimmer and quickly catch the eyes and hearts of so many of our shoppers. In a cartoon world, we would be seeing animated fluttering hearts as abundant as fireflies on a summer’s night. It’s always wonderful to see this kind of delight – knowing that someone has found the perfect pendant or set of earrings.
With spring just around the corner…and days warming up so we can edge a little closer to that big salty sea, I hope you’ll make visiting Beach Treasures in Duck part of your Outer Banks experience. We are located on the Town of Duck's Boardwalk, along the Currituck Sound.
I invite you to shop the magnificent collection of jewelry showcased here and online and thank you for reading our BLOG, “The Treasure Trove.” The super-sparkly pieces pictured in the cover photo (above) feature colorful, hand-set crystals and are currently available in-store only.
]]>I came upon this rhodochrosite bracelet while shopping – and as we all love to do when visiting a new place – I marveled at how it captured so much of the southwest. Perhaps the rosy tones of the rhodochrosite don’t conjure up images of bold canyons in the desert, but they sure do capture the sky. To watch the transformation from brilliant blue to rosy reds and finally to those midnight hues is to be amazed on a nightly basis.
The desert southwest is an inspirational backdrop to be sure. Showcasing such an extensive collection of jewelry at Beach Treasures in Duck has provided me the good fortune to enjoy many a journey seeking and meeting designers and artisans. Over the years, I’ve learned a great deal about gems, but not nearly as much as I’ve learned from and about the artisans behind all this exquisite work. The stones are naturally beautiful – but the craftsmanship and artistry are what infuse them with their spirit.
So, I’m back on the Outer Banks now – feeling at home under a big Carolina Blue sky with salty air. Feverishly unpacking so many special finds in hopes to bring them all to you just in time for Valentine’s Day! Trust me…there are SO many pieces to make your heart sparkle.
I invite you to shop the magnificent collection of jewelry showcased here at Beach Treasures Online as well as in our shop, Beach Treasures in Duck located exclusively on the Town of Duck’s Boardwalk on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

To look back at the shop where this all started, it is hard to recognize the beginnings of the current iteration of Beach Treasures. We were Beach Essentials back then...filled with beach supplies, toys, 30+ tee shirt designs, novelties, and yes, those "beloved" Hermit Crabs! When I shopped for the store, I purchased anything that was a needed beach supply plus anything that would make me laugh! I'm told I have a positive attitude -- and I certainly wanted my customers to come in and have a fun time, here and on the beach.
While we have maintained Beach Essentials as our corporate name, we have spent many years practicing some trial and error! Adding this and that only to realize it wasn't the best fit! While I NOW have over 35 years (eek!) of retail experience, my education didn't come from college...but rather watching, learning, and doing. Each individual who has worked with me in the shop has left his or her mark. What you might not realize is that each one of you walking through our door has also contributed to the new dynamic of our Beach Treasures in Duck.
Some 20 years ago, I found a beautiful larimar pendant while on vacation. I'd never seen the stone before...fell in love with it and purchased it on the spot. It was the best money I've ever spent! My customers saw me wearing this pendant, and over the course of the summer, convinced me that they would buy jewelry from me! So, when I purchased the business I'd managed for years, I purchased three used jewelry cases...and the rest (as they say) is history!
I started with a simple concept: pink rhodochrosite, purple Russian Charoite, sky blue larimar. My thought was to keep the jewelry under $50...and priced for an impulse purchase. I also brought in a few statement pieces to draw the eye to the jewelry case...and guess what you liked. So were the humble beginnings of Beach Treasures.
We started adding cases -- a whole case of Baltic Amber brought in by a wonderful young man from Poland. Then we ventured into Native American designs, at which point I quickly learned that, some women only buy one piece if you have everything (ring, earrings, pendants and bracelet). Truly, all or nothing at all! Now, I have many customers who prefer complimentary over matching pieces -- so we offer it all, thinking it would be quite boring if everyone wanted the same thing! And with the addition of over 30 local artists and an ever-expanding unique gift collection, we have something for almost everyone...and we don't really miss the Hermit Crabs!
Being located on the Outer Banks is, to my mind, a huge advantage! Beyond the beautiful scenery and being a vacation destination, our location on the Town of Duck gives us the opportunity to work with clients from as far away as Canada and Germany, visitors from up and down the East Coast and all the way west to California. Working with customers possessing different styles, needs, and desires. is akin to the proverbial box of chocolates (you never know what you'll get!)
With Beach Treasures Online, we are trying to bring that fun shopping experience to our customers near and far. We love seeing our old friends walk through the door. Groups of friends enjoying a ladies weekend...trying on our newest Ed Levin designs or looking for that perfect Spiny Oyster pendant to go with the ring purchased during the last visit! We love helping husbands and boyfriends select that special gift (satisfaction guaranteed and gift wrapping included). With the website we are trying to replicate that experience as best we can. We greatly appreciate your feedback on your online experience. We cannot fix a problem, if we do not know it exists. We love the positive comments too...and suggestions for how we can improve!
So, I'm going to spend this New Year -- 2020 -- celebrating our upcoming milestone. Please come in and join us -- we will have mini-celebrations building up to the main event!

]]>Holidays are a time we get busy! Perhaps one party after another … a bit of frenzied shopping … and the traveling, whether near or far -- sometimes there seems to be no end to the miles-long holiday to-do list.
However, amidst all that bustling, I appreciate taking the time to reflect on the moments shared with family and friends, customers, colleagues, and even strangers, to remember that the season is about so much more.
It is a time to reflect upon peace, love, and goodwill…the sparkle…the good stuff.
It may be a challenge to not let the busy-ness of the holidays eclipse these wonderful things. The giving of gifts need not be in the form of material things -- it could be lending a hand with a chore or sharing your talents where they are badly needed.
Look around…see the flickering lights and sparkly stuff. Understanding that this is how we would all like to feel inside is reminder enough to take the chance – whenever you have it – to share joy. Oh, how we all do need it!
And before I close, I do want to extend my appreciation to all of our online shoppers whose purchases have helped us “give back” to important causes here on the Outer Banks. Your support is appreciated!
So on behalf of everyone here at Beach Treasures in Duck, have a wonderful holiday and best wishes as we head into 2020.

]]>A time honored, symbol of beauty and purity…without which no jewelry collection is complete.
Pearls…all sorts.
As the saying goes, pearls are always appropriate whether your style is classic or contemporary. And just in case you’re wondering…adding them to your outfit doesn’t necessarily mean unpacking your grandmother’s traditional string of pearls.
As you’re bound to discover from perusing our newest collection, pearl jewelry takes many forms and can actually be quite interesting. Take for instance the Biwa -- a freshwater – pearl. Biwas captivate thanks to their unusual shapes and characteristics. Biwas actually helped make owning pearl jewelry affordable for many. But cost aside, freshwater pearls boast beautiful sheen and add radiance to gemstone bracelets and necklaces. While beautiful on their own, their shapes and colors make them an ideal gem to include in an ensemble of other gorgeous gemstones.
I suppose it’s important to remember that pearls of all types form as a reaction to an irritant inside the shell of mollusks like oysters and mussels. The mollusk reacts to the irritation by secreting a substance known as nacre, which over time, builds up to form a pearl. When this happens naturally, a natural pearl is formed…when an irritant is added artificially; the result is a pearl that we refer to as “cultured.”
Mother of Pearl generally refers to the thin layer of nacre -- the iridescent coating in a mollusk's shell. This thin layer can be carved or cut into cabochon-like shapes -- and as a result can take a variety of shapes. Seen in pieces displaying inlay or by itself, mother of pearl jewelry can evokes a vintage or romantic feel. Just take a look at the pieces by designer Janice Girardi.
And finally, the classic – the robust, round gems that dangle as earrings, sit solemnly in a setting, or amass in strands that everyone’s inner Audrey Hepburn finds hard to resist. But when you find the piece that captures your fancy -- timeless or not – know that part of their appeal is that pearls are most often associated with inner wisdom (think pearls of wisdom) and nurturing the growth of pure love.
So go ahead, fall in love with a pearl.
Beach Treasures in Duck, located exclusively on the Town of Duck’s Boardwalk on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, is proud to highlight our newest collection: Pearls. Thank you for visiting our site and reading our BLOG, “The Treasure Trove.”
]]>Recognizable and distinctively Southwest, Spider Web Opal jewelry is actually a handcrafted composite of several kinds of opal. When all is said and done, spider web opal emerges as a hard gemstone, and unlike opal, can be worn every day. Good news for its fans.
The unique color of Spider Opal comes from distraction of light, just as in natural opal. Refraction creates the unique webbing and patterns that give the pieces their magical qualities, resulting in infinite combinations of beauty in each piece. It’s glistening kaleidoscope of colors – in seemingly endless combinations – complementary and contrasting – results in stunning jewelry that’s truly hard to resist.
“To express a marriage of two complementary colors,
their mingling and their opposition, the mysterious vibrations of kindred tones.”
-- Vincent Van Gogh
The spider web opal jewelry showcased at Beach Treasures in Duck is Native American Made with origins in New Mexico. Years ago, on one of my annual treasure hunts out West, I was fortunate to discover an artisan whose passion is promoting spider web opal jewelry that has been authentically crafted in the traditions of Native American jewelry makers.
No matter the piece, each one has been created by an accomplished artisan. The work is exceptional and displays the talents and traditions of a respected Native American craft.
Inlay jewelry is some of the most popular -- made by creating a master piece with channels designed for gemstones to be inlayed into them. The channels have a locking groove or an angle to prevent the gemstone from falling out. Once the master is created, stone – whether spider web opal, turquoise, or spiny oyster shell -- is hand cut to fit into the channels, glued in with a high strength epoxy, cured and finally ground, sanded, and polished to perfection.
“Genius is eternal patience.”
― Michelangelo Buonarroti
One might imagine that the beauty of these pieces lies in the traditions of the trade and the inspiration from surroundings that are dramatically different than here on the Outer Banks. The magnificent landscape…the fiery, robust colors at dawn and dusk dancing across canyons and mighty rock formations. The Southwest has a spirit all its own. It is a region with breathtaking vistas, endless starry skies, and rich warm traditions. That spider web opal jewelry has the ability to give us a glimpse of that beauty is truly remarkable.
I invite you to browse all of our spider web opal jewelry – displayed among the work of our renowned designers and artisans here at Beach Treasures in Duck...found exclusively on the Town of Duck Boardwalk.
Kyanite – a unique gemstone -- gets its name from the Greek word kuanos, meaning deep blue. Mined from sedimentary rocks or other formations, kyanite is believed to hold positive energy and is probably best known for its balancing properties. And while its colors include indigo, green and black – the blue – an icy, glacial, deep blue, streaked with white -- is arguably its most beautiful version of itself.
Kyanite gemstones make stunning, unique pieces. As a stone, it can stand alone in a solitary sterling setting for a pair of classic earrings, a pendant, or gemstone ring. And since blue complements and contrasts with an array of colors, as a gemstone it is frequently combined with so many others to create showstopper pieces! Complementary colors, when used together in color schemes, are especially dynamic and pleasing to the eye. Some of our most recent additions here at Beach Treasures in Duck have kyanite sharing the stage with druzy quartz, jasper, blue topaz, pearl…just to name a few!
Two of our most popular jewelry designers, Chris Bales and Charles Albert frequently use kyanite in their designer creations. Wearable art to be sure, many of these pieces are well suited to be the centerpiece of your outfit. A multi-gemstone bracelet featuring kyanite will work across the seasons and the wardrobe! A multi-stone bracelet can be the colorful compliment to your favorite weekend jeans and fall sweater just as easily as a statement pendant can be THE pop of color when you're all decked out in crisp white linen.
I invite you to browse all of our kyanite jewelry – displayed among the work of our renowned designers – or as stand alone pieces here at Beach Treasures in Duck...found exclusively on the Town of Duck Boardwalk.

It’s for good reason too – because after all, who doesn’t love a piece that’s one of a kind!? While this can be said for so many pieces here at Beach Treasures in Duck, I do enjoy having an opportunity to highlight the unusual pieces that come our way. Whether it’s a distinctive gem or an extraordinary piece by one of admired jewelry designers, Our Special Finds is a collection of pendants, earrings, and bracelets that you won’t find anywhere else.
What’s interesting now -- as I sit down to write this BLOG after Hurricane Dorian has come and gone – is reflecting upon just how many gemstones are beloved because of their properties related to healing, strength, and courage. And given what’s happened to so many OBX’ers to our south on Hatteras Island and Ocracoke, and throughout the Bahamas, I’m thinking that healing energy (regardless of where it comes from!) is something that many need right now.
Take for instance blue lace agate – an opulent stone seen in several of the gemstone bracelets by designer Chris Bales – this beautiful stone is thought to impart tranquility. In addition, chalcedony is believed to absorb negative energy, and with that, is thought to bring one’s emotions and spirit into harmony.
Then there’s white buffalo turquoise, with its understated boldness -- it comes as no surprise that this gem is believed to deliver determination. And pieces including yellow jasper, are known for delivering support during times of stress…plus the happiness of a sunny yellow seldom disappoints!
Interestingly, while altogether different stones, both sodalite and chrysocolla admired for their beautiful blue colorations disperse negativity and usher in calm and wisdom. And finally, when a kaleidoscope of gemstones combine in Native American inlay, spiny oyster shell can be counted on to not only add bright color but also encouraging cooperation.
So browse away, my friends…and be sure you’re following us on Instagram too (because there have been times when a piece doesn’t even make it to our site!) You can find us @beachtreasuresnc

When the warm afternoons of fall approach, our sunsets become even more amazing. Less dust and less pollution mean more intense colors…and all of those beautiful striations wash across the sky at day’s end. The wide-open beauty of the Outer Banks allows for a wide-lens view of the nightly show. And when the day begins to wind down, there are only a few places better to watch than right outside our door, here on the boardwalk in Duck.
When the colors are rich and bold, I can’t help but think about Russian Charoite -- one of the most distinct gemstones available on the market today. It’s not uncommon to hear it described as being 'unnaturally beautiful,' primarily because it boasts such distinct characteristics. For starters, its colors are unmistakable — ranging from pale lilac to deep purple. Most charoite gemstones exhibit several shades in unique patterns…swirling, streaking, and sometimes even feathery.
The array of pieces we have to showcase here at Beach Treasures in Duck almost always display varying swirling mixes in a range of colors – all seen in a single stone. A multiple stone bracelet is a variable feast for the eyes…and a single stone pendant indeed makes a statement. Always perfect for an added pop of color…purple seems to know no boundaries of occasion or season…and come to think of it, neither does the nighttime sky.
Love what you see? Browse our entire collection of Russian Charoite. We are proud to showcase several renowned jewelry designers in addition to Native American artists here at Beach Treasures in Duck...found exclusively on the Town of Duck Boardwalk.
]]>Yet Mother of Pearl, isn’t really a gem – it’s the inside lining of a mollusk shell, and the actual term in nacre. Most commonly found in three types of mollusks — pearl oysters, freshwater mussels, and abalone – it’s actually an organic material lining the interior of these shells to protect them from parasites and foreign irritants. It makes sense then, that over the year’s people have come to refer to it as Mother of Pearl -- the nacre lining a belly in which pearls are produced.
Thought to be a “protection stone,” some believe that Mother of Pearl conveys the gentle healing power of the ocean. It’s thought to be a stress relieving stone – working to soothe and calm our emotions. It’s also believed that Mother of Pearl may stimulate our intuition and imagination – which along with soothing, I know that when I am able to spend any length of time at the beach I feel like this!
And while its appearance may look quite delicate or even brittle, Mother of Pearl is surprisingly strong and resilient – its outward luminosity disguising its inner strength. When the light touches its surface, the multicolored iridescence that’s revealed is what makes it so recognizable. And though Mother of Pearl is primarily used for jewelry, you’ve likely seen it in mosaic tile designs or in accents on instruments including guitars, harmonicas, and accordions. It’s also seen in buttons, cufflinks and the faces of wristwatches too. Several of our Native American made pieces may have bits of Mother of Pearl within their inlaid designs.
Love what you see? Take a peek at all of the lovely pieces from designer Janice Girardi featuring Mother of Pearl and various gemstones as well. We are proud to showcase several renowned jewelry designers at Beach Treasures in Duck...found exclusively on the Town of Duck Boardwalk.

Druzy – the result of crystallization on stone – looks like crystalized sparkling sugar on the outer rind of a gemstone. Just yummy!
And because this is a natural process, druzy quartz (despite its appearance) is an amazingly durable and strong stone.
At Beach Treasures in Duck, you’ll find druzy jewelry in a variety of colors and settings – and for my customers, this is a big part of its appeal! Popular colors range from the natural silvery grey to brilliant Caribbean blue…but you’ll also see it in white, black, and pink. Titanium druzy -- another big favorite – with its iridescent qualities, reflects a kaleidoscope of colors.
It’s no surprise that druzy captures attention…with all of its tiny, sparkling crystals; druzy quartz is reminiscent of sugar or snow. Whether its coloring is vivid or muted, it's a gem that often takes center stage in a statement pendant or adds an irresistible shine to a multi-gemstone bracelet. On it’s own, druzy holds its own – whether showcased as singular druzy pendant or in sparkling earrings that will up stage that little black dress.
And as for its magic…many believe that druzy amplifies and purifies our body's natural energy by promoting energy balance on a mental, physical, and spiritual level. It’s also been said that the gemstone boosts creativity and imagination – which if you take it on its (shiny) surface – makes so much sense. Who doesn’t feel uplifted when a rainbow arches across the sky or when sun’s rays skitter across the crashing waves?
Beach Treasures in Duck is found exclusively on the Town of Duck Boardwalk…an ideal spot for shopping while you’re on the Outer Banks. I hope your travels lead you to our special place and I thank you for visiting our site and reading our BLOG, “The Treasure Trove.”
Love what you see? The teardrop pendants and bracelet are by designer Chris Bales...and the trio of slender iridescent pendants are by designer Charles Albert. We are proud to showcase both of these renowned jewelry designers at Beach Treasures in Duck and here online.
It’s one of my earliest memories…how about you?
When the crew of Apollo 11 launched from the Earth in July of 1969 I was a little girl. If I had any awareness of what was happening, it was because everyone’s attention was fixed more on the “black and white box” in the living room than whatever the kids were getting in to. But despite my young age, I do remember the gathering around the television and sensing that something BIG was indeed happening.
As an adult --- miles and miles away from my childhood home in Montclair, New Jersey -- I still find that I gaze at the moon and stars with a sense of childlike wonder. Space, like the ocean, still feels vast. Full of curiosity…especially when I consider that Wilbur & Orville’s First Flight in 1903 was merely a dozen or so miles from where I now live…how is it possible that in 66 short years we flew to the MOON?
Living on the Outer Banks we are fortunate to see many cosmic marvels – August’s Perseid meteor showers, Mars, Venus & Saturn with our naked eyes…rockets launched from NASA Wallops located to our north on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and of course the International Space Station silently passing only 250 miles above our heads. On this beautiful barrier island -- spared from light pollution and tall structures -- daily sunrises, nightly sunsets, and just about anything happening in the skies up above (provided there’s no cloud cover) are just part of the daily show Mother Nature puts forth for us to see and appreciate.
So here’s to NASA on the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11 and the Moon Landing – to the Man on the Moon and that our NEXT GIANT LEAP will see a Woman on the Moon that is bound to usher in challenges and accomplishments that (for now) are hard to imagine as we watch the nighttime summer sky.
Beach Treasures in Duck is found exclusively on the Town of Duck Boardwalk…an ideal spot for shopping, sunset watching, and stargazing too! While you’re on the Outer Banks, we hope you’ll find your way to us and thank you for visiting our site and reading our BLOG, “The Treasure Trove.”
And yes, that beautiful bracelet is (of course) MOONSTONE!

It’s an Outer Banks highlight...and a moment to celebrate America! Starting with a morning parade followed by a festive gathering on the Town Green with live music and lots of camaraderie, complete with a slice of watermelon from the local fruit market. Boy does it taste great when it’s hotter than July!
A small town in its own right, Duck swells in the summer thanks to our beautiful location on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. A sea to sound community -- where visitors arrive to our shop by car or foot (and on occasion, by boat) -- with a Village boasting locally owned shops like ours, all connected by a meandering boardwalk on the shores of the Currituck Sound.
If you’ve not been to Beach Treasures in Duck you’ll find an extensive line of gemstone jewelry along with treasures perfect for preserving fun summer memories or as keepsakes you’ll cherish the rest of your life. Fortunately for us, we are surrounded (and showcase) jewelry designers, artisans, and other creatives who reside locally or have a spirit-connection with our locale and us.
So here’s to all things summer in America – backyard barbeques, outdoor music, beach time, and an ice cream cone or two. I hope you'll be enjoying a festive day today -- wherever you are! From all of us here at Beach Treasures in Duck, Happy 4th of July to all of our readers and customers. Thank you for visiting our site and reading our BLOG, “The Treasure Trove.”
]]>For nearly 30 years, the sea has inspired jewelry designer Chris Bales. Hailing from New Jersey, Chris spent her childhood “down the shore” on Long Beach Island where summers in the 60s and 70s were uncomplicated and far more carefree than nowadays. There’s a familiar feel on LBI – perhaps a kinship felt among those of us living on a barrier island.
Chris endeavored into the world of jewelry design during visits to Mexico where she, like many, sought out exquisite sterling jewelry. Finding inspiration from it and the verdant surrounds, eventually Chris pursued the idea of making her own jewelry. This decision brought more time spent in Mexico spent working with and learning from many local jewelry artisans. Ultimately her artistic pursuits – on a small scale at first – were realized with a collection bearing her name and signature touch.
Chris Bales has an artist’s eye…
Chris’ eye and affinity for working with gemstones sets her work apart from others. Having a keen eye for stones -- envisioning one with another and creating unexpected combinations -- is a hallmark for her bracelets and necklaces. Beyond statement pieces, Chris’ works capture the essence of the beach…a seahorse, a mermaid…perhaps a collection of stones shimmering like the ocean blue. I feel like every piece whispers a story between artist and wearer.
So it’s no surprise (to me) that for a dozen or so years Chris Bales’ “treasures” have been showcased here at Beach Treasures in Duck. In so many ways, it was kismet. Her creations were a perfect fit when I was expanding the shop and building the collections we showcase today. So a word to the wise: each handcrafted piece of Chris Bales jewelry is one of a kind…forever changing…just like the tide.
The piece you are seeking may have just washed ashore…
Beach Treasures in Duck, located exclusively on the Town of Duck’s Boardwalk on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, is proud to showcase Chris Bales as part of our extensive collection of designer jewelry. Thank you for visiting our site and reading our BLOG, “The Treasure Trove.”

Was it the sterling silver filigree atop smokey topaz dangles or the bold purple Russian Charoite pendant strung on a delicate chain of silver dotted with amethyst beads?
Meet the designs of Janice Girardi!
As a designer, I sometimes find her work hard to define. While one piece might call to someone who loves all-things-vintage,another piece speaks contemporary fashion – so sometimes I think it’s easier to describe her and her wearable works of art as…
Inspired!
Janice’s pieces incorporate elements of more than one particular design style -- mixing old with new…and who knows, maybe even the borrowed and most certainly the blue! Having represented this sensational designer over the years, I believe each piece has a story to tell…whether it's how the gems were curated or the emotions invoked by the pieces showcased in the shop.
Many Tastes, Many Styles
The romantics – with open hearts and admiration for the beauty in the world – admire the delicate chains, sterling filigree, and pretty little details that give many of Janice’s pieces their feminine, romantic feel. And the whimsical ones are drawn in too – delighting in unexpected details and the Bohemian features found in several of her pendants and earrings. No doubt, shoppers who appreciate handcrafted, artisan design are always eager to examine her jewelry and the one-of-a-kind pieces they know are waiting to be discovered here at Beach Treasures in Duck.
Recent additions in the shop (and online) are pieces that that will appeal to those seeking chic as well as hippie-chic. Faceted blue topaz or hand-carved mother of pearl…what inspires you? Nothing should prevent you from enjoying your personal style – and expressing it with a necklace, bracelet, or earrings. If it’s your idea of beautiful…and inspires you…it doesn't need to be in fashion to be you. The designs of Janice Girardi are creative so if you’ve not taken a peek, see if any suit your style.
You’ll find that several of our newest additions can be purchased to create “a set.” And while it’s a classic way to coordinate your look, the really great part is that you're under no obligation to wear all of the pieces together! I think it’s safe to say that the days of matchy-matchy are behind us.
Beach Treasures in Duck, located exclusively on the Town of Duck’s Boardwalk on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, is proud to showcase Janice Girardi as part of our extensive collection designer jewelry. Thank you for visiting our site and reading our BLOG, “The Treasure Trove.”]]>Boulder turquoise is often unknown to many.
I’ve seen a lot of boulder turquoise at gem shows and here at Beach Treasures in Duck. Just when I think I’ve seen it all, another unique piece catches my eye…leading me to believe that the combinations of sterling and stone are nearly countless…which in my mind is why boulder turquoise always makes a statement!
Boulder turquoise has great coloring with its various shades of teal running through rich, earthy browns like veins. When you see a piece, you’d be right to guess that it’s been crafted by Native American jewelry artisans. No doubt, when set in beautifully detailed or brilliantly sleek sterling, a piece of boulder turquoise jewelry catches the eye even if the gemstone isn’t immediately recognizable.
Interesting, attractive, eye-catching…
And when you’re thinking about fashion – and jewelry in particular – this is what a statement piece is all about.
A statement piece is the thing people notice first about your outfit. It's not necessarily an overly colorful or oversized piece, but it is by design, bold and unique. It's just one of many ways to express your distinctive style. When you put it on, it’s bold and bodacious – and that's essential. It doesn’t have to be over the top…well, unless you want it to be;-)
A boulder turquoise pendant is a terrific choice for turning a casual outfit into a put-together, dressier one. And because its colors are relatively neutral, I find it appeals to many of my customers. Pair it with a solid-colored top or dress and see it pop! Elevate your favorite t-shirt and jeans with a statement piece for a dressier look…or add a bit of style to your workday wardrobe.
But there really aren’t any rules…not for the BODACIOUS! Savor our collection of boulder turquoise and find inspiration in its unique character. Whether a pendant, cuff, or earrings…find the piece for you and show off your BOLD style.

Their studio is located in the quaint Victorian Village of Cambridge in Upstate New York. It’s an eclectic community filled with families and business, boasting some of the best scenery in the state. And believe me, I’ve seen it…it IS beautiful! Producing original, heirloom-quality jewelry for over 70 years, their artisans are inspired by a vision “to create a sense of wonder while expressing something significant.” Each piece is created with age-old techniques, cutting edge technology, using the finest metals and stones – the end result being a three-dimensional wearable work of art.
In 2012 Peter Tonjes, originally hired by the well-known contemporary jewelry designer, Ed Levin, to manage production, began the process of transforming the company into a fashion forward jewelry brand, E.L. Designs. Peter grew the company over a period of thirty years -- homing in on a design vision and striving for perfection for every piece of Ed Levin Jewelry.
The appeal of E.L. Designs here in Duck is its timelessness…
The E.L. Designs Signature Bracelet is one of the most popular pieces – and I have to agree that it does make for the perfect gift, especially when some big celebrating is involved! (Hint, hint...Graduation is Coming!) I’ve seen this classic piece in sterling silver with 14K gold wraps inspire many other designs…including the newest Sparkler Collection featuring pieces adorned with channel-set diamonds and pink sapphires. (Not seen it yet? Well be sure you take a peek…because like I said, it’s irresistible!)

A feeling of hope after the harshness of winter -- seen in the renewal of flowers and plants that fill our gardens and deck planters with color.
Here at Beach Treasures in Duck, gaspeite jewelry grabs our attention much in the same way that our blooming hydrangeas delight the walkers strolling the Town of Duck boardwalk. As a gemstone, gaspeite stone is a relatively rare mineral. It is found in only a few locales – Canada, where it was originally discovered in Quebec, and Western Australia.
Gaspeite is generally recognized by its light green color – as bright and fresh as crisp green apples – which makes it quite unique. If you’re not familiar with this stone, you may recognize its use in Native American jewelry for pops of color and visual interest. On its own, gaspeite with all of its variety, makes for beautiful earrings, bracelets, and cuffs. Some varieties are almost neon green while others reveal chocolately brown patches – all this variation adding that special-something to a pendant or ring set in sterling silver.
As a healing stone, gaspeite is thought to reduce stress -- generating a grounded spiritual energy that encourages a wearer to live life in the real world, yet from a spiritual perspective. Others believe gaspeite might actually enhance our ability to clear the clutter from our lives – paralleling spring when most of us become inspired to “spring clean.” Remove the dust, reorder the pantries, and sort the wardrobe! Yet even though these projects tend to overtake an entire weekend…if you’re like me…the satisfaction of cleaning out junk and making more space feels great! And yes, that’s less stress in my book!
So happy spring, shoppers! Here’s to some fresh air, fresh ideas and perhaps some shopping too!
Beach Treasures in Duck, located exclusively on the Town of Duck’s Boardwalk on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, features an extensive collection of gemstone and designer jewelry. Thank you for visiting our site and reading our BLOG, “The Treasure Trove.”

Much of the time, as we walk along the shore, we step over bits and pieces of broken shells – tidbits of flotsam and jetsam that have washed up -- at least for a little while. But on occasion, especially when we’ve finally discovered island time, something about the color or shape of a find beckons us to bend over and pick it up.
Maybe it’s the colorful shell or its odd shape. Maybe it glistens…
…and we find ourselves hoping for a piece of seaglass -- a tumbled piece of glass that was once a glass or jar or maybe a bottle full of rum or exotic perfume. If the same broken glass were lying on the sidewalk, we’d pass them by, giving little thought to the rubbish (or perhaps we’d be inclined to search for a broom!)
But let’s face it – finding a whelk (even pieces of one) and seaglass are treasures we seek! We tuck them away in our pockets or beach bags and display them in the sun for all to see and the sun to warm. But some take the next step…turning those finds into something more…and at Beach Treasures in Duck we’ve done that with our own brand of seaglass and seashell jewelry: BT★Sterling
Created from findings along the Outer Banks beaches – from Ocracoke to Carova, even as far south as Beaufort – and with the help of our in-house artist, Barbara Hearne, we’ve created a beautiful line of jewelry from the treasures that the sea has tossed our way.
We have many family members and friends to thank for all of their sandy steps and for turning over their discoveries for Barbara’s keen eye and artistic flair. Once pieces are culled or combined, a wonderful friend in Florida encases the pieces in 9.25 sterling silver – creating stunning earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and pendants. We like to say that our BT★Sterling pieces are 99% OBX…and think that make wonderful keepsakes to remember your time spent on the Outer Banks. Mother Nature’s artwork – from Duck (or beyond) to wherever your heart finds its home.
BT★Sterling seaglass and seashell jewelry is available online from Beach Treasures Online as well as in our shop, Beach Treasures in Duck located exclusively on the Town of Duck’s Boardwalk on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Other collectibles and Outer Banks keepsakes can be found on our other e-commerce site, Outer Banks Gifts Online (www.outerbanksgiftsonline.com)

Its rich merlot red is elegant and refined — a richness closely associated with true love. The purple, so often associated with royalty, is a perfect illustration of the gemstone’s ancient lore. And finally, its sunshiny orange — optimistic and hopeful, just like spring itself. And when you put them all together… their individual depth and opulence really come to life.
Spiny oyster shell and the classic jewelry showcasing its inherent beauty is frequently used in pieces crafted by Native American artisans. Also, because the colors of spiny oyster shell combine very well with turquoise its not unusual to find this gem utilized for embellishment. Much of the Native American made jewelry at Beach Treasures in Duck includes these gemstones – standing solo or combined into tiny mosaics… inlayed with meticulous artistry and silversmithing. Striations are accented by detailed sterling or patterns of inlay embellish dangling earrings, statement pendants, or bracelets boasting a kaleidoscope of color.
So here’s to spring – with longer days that make us feel a bit more animated and colorful inside and out. Add a pop of color to your own jewelry collection with the bold, rich, and bright colors of spiny oyster shell showcased here at Beach Treasures Online as well as in our shop, Beach Treasures in Duck located exclusively on the Town of Duck’s Boardwalk on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Footloose and fancy free, Charles would find delight and a bit of magic in what others would pass by. It takes a rare gem (of a person) to find beauty and purpose in that which is left behind…and Charles did just that. Rocks weren’t rocks to Charles — and today, a stone or a piece of sea washed glass is likely to be transformed into a magnificent bracelet, pendant, or earrings. Lucky us!
Perhaps a bit ahead of the curve, Charles has been “green” by transforming and repurposing his finds into designer jewelry. Whether a whimsical sea-inspired bracelet or bold gemstone pendant, Charles hand selects the individual treasures that make up each one. His unusual materials are sourced from around the world, designed in Florida and handcrafted in Mexico by some of the most talented metal smiths in the world.
At Beach Treasures in Duck, the most sought after pieces are his recycled beach glass necklaces and earrings. Because each piece of glass varies in color, shape, and size — each jewelry creation is one-of-a-kind. Some people like to find beach glass and collect it in a jar…we’re glad Charles transforms it into such beautiful creations.
Interestingly, the fun of turning one’s sea glass into jewelry is something we enjoy doing here at Beach Treasures. Come summer, we hold weekly workshops with local artisan Laura Howard.
In Charles Albert jewelry you’ll find gemstones such as Biwa pearls — believed to posses the power of purity and integrity — and Aztec Lapis stones with their earthy, stories to tell. Slices of seashells that let the wearer imagine a beach upon which they washed ashore…or bits of blue topaz said to enhance sweetness. It's the blending of textures and colors…of mystical properties and stories untold that make the designs of Charles Albert so appealing.
We are proud to showcase Charles Albert here at Beach Treasures Online as well as in our shop, Beach Treasures in Duck located exclusively on the Town of Duck’s Boardwalk on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

For me, the hues and striations of the stone also remind me of canyon walls in the southwest…and the panoramic vistas…landscapes I have been fortunate to enjoy while traveling in search of Native American made gemstone jewelry.
Rhodochrosite is known for possessing healing properties including drawing love to the wearer. It is said to be both the most gentle as well as the most vibrant loving stone to heal the heart chakra – or anahata – associated with the thymus gland which is responsible for hormone production and the regulation of the immune system. Often sought out for clearing and balancing, rhodochrosite gemstones are also thought to help to rid the body of the irritants and toxicities thought to exacerbate challenges that lead to disordered eating, asthma and other respiratory problems...and even improving eyesight!
Curiously – the word rhodochrosite means rose-colored – a term used to describe a sense of optimism and seeing something in a positive way. And while the connection between health and positivity is not crystal clear (no pun intended!), some studies suggest that people with a more positive outlook may be better protected against the inflammatory damage of stress in addition to making healthier life decisions and focusing more on long-term goals. In short, being more resilient – a positive state where we feel as though we are flourishing rather than floundering, thriving rather than thrashing. And if rhodochrosite simply brings more happiness to YOUR life, then (quite frankly) I’m in!
My personal preference in these beautiful semi precious stones leans towards lots of swirls and striations since this adds character to the pendant, bracelet, and earrings, making them truly original. Oddly enough, my rhodochrosite pendant is deep rose and crystalline in nature, with no striations at all. In this instance, the pendant seemed to choose me (versus it being my choice)!
If you want to see an exquisite example of artisan cutting and polishing the rhodochrosite stone to balance and match the stones, I invite you to see the rhodochrosite gemstone jewelry showcased here at Beach Treasures Online as well as in our shop, Beach Treasures in Duck located exclusively on the Town of Duck’s Boardwalk on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I found some beautifully matched stones while in Tucson at the Gem and Jewelry shows just a few weeks ago!
]]>While on vacation in the Caribbean, I came upon the larimar stone while shopping, as we all love to do when visiting a new place. Something about the stone spoke to me – its color for starters. It was as blue and translucent as the ocean I had come to swim in. But there was more. As I spoke with the shopkeeper, I became charmed by its story…by its formation from fierce volcanic eruptions and the romantic folklore…
Larimar, a rare gem with a mysterious history, exists only in the Dominican Republic. And as the story would tell it, an earthquake dislodged pieces into a river, where they eventually tumbled downstream awaiting to be discovered. One of the early artisans used these small blue pebbles, naming them for his daughter, “Larissa” and the Spanish word for ocean, “Mar.” Local children can still be seen running up and down the shore in search of their own treasures.
Needless to say, I returned to the Outer Banks having purchased a stunning larimar pendant for myself.
Not much time passed that before I began showcasing larimar gemstone jewelry at Beach Treasures in Duck. After all, my customers had been insisting having fallen in love with MY larimar necklace! And on a barrier island -- with the Atlantic to the east and the Currituck Sound right outside our doors – a gemstone like larimar, one evoking the beauty of the ocean is a natural fit.
Marah Lago and I started working together before the brand of MarahLago Larimarwas developed. As I took my journey into jewelry, MarahLago refined her jewelry pieces into the design line that you see today --a premiere jewelry designer creating fashion forward pieces. Whether simple or adorned, every piece of MarahLago Larimar jewelry captivates one of my customers – many of them returning season after season looking for a pair of matching larimar earrings or perhaps a new piece for someone special. The stone itself it naturally beautiful – luminous and cool – and the designs of MarahLago take it one step further capturing the spirit of this rare Caribbean gemstone.
During this time, Beach Treasures in Duck went from offering a limited number of jewelry items at the check out to sixteen cases of jewelry filled with larimar jewelry in addition to semi-precious stones and sterling silver jewelry collections from all around the world.
I invite you to shop the magnificent collection of MarahLago larimar jewelry showcased here at Beach Treasures Online as well as in our shop, Beach Treasures in Duck located exclusively on the Town of Duck’s Boardwalk on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
