From Humble Beginnings: Musings at the Start of a New Decade!
It's so hard to believe that it is a new DECADE! Not just a new year. This has me counting -- literally -- the years since I started my journey at Beach Treasures back in March of 1991. The math says that in March of 2021 I will celebrate the 30th anniversary in this shop! (And yes, there will be a party!)
To look back at the shop where this all started, it is hard to recognize the beginnings of the current iteration of Beach Treasures. We were Beach Essentials back then...filled with beach supplies, toys, 30+ tee shirt designs, novelties, and yes, those "beloved" Hermit Crabs! When I shopped for the store, I purchased anything that was a needed beach supply plus anything that would make me laugh! I'm told I have a positive attitude -- and I certainly wanted my customers to come in and have a fun time, here and on the beach.
While we have maintained Beach Essentials as our corporate name, we have spent many years practicing some trial and error! Adding this and that only to realize it wasn't the best fit! While I NOW have over 35 years (eek!) of retail experience, my education didn't come from college...but rather watching, learning, and doing. Each individual who has worked with me in the shop has left his or her mark. What you might not realize is that each one of you walking through our door has also contributed to the new dynamic of our Beach Treasures in Duck.
Some 20 years ago, I found a beautiful larimar pendant while on vacation. I'd never seen the stone before...fell in love with it and purchased it on the spot. It was the best money I've ever spent! My customers saw me wearing this pendant, and over the course of the summer, convinced me that they would buy jewelry from me! So, when I purchased the business I'd managed for years, I purchased three used jewelry cases...and the rest (as they say) is history!
I started with a simple concept: pink rhodochrosite, purple Russian Charoite, sky blue larimar. My thought was to keep the jewelry under $50...and priced for an impulse purchase. I also brought in a few statement pieces to draw the eye to the jewelry case...and guess what you liked. So were the humble beginnings of Beach Treasures.
We started adding cases -- a whole case of Baltic Amber brought in by a wonderful young man from Poland. Then we ventured into Native American designs, at which point I quickly learned that, some women only buy one piece if you have everything (ring, earrings, pendants and bracelet). Truly, all or nothing at all! Now, I have many customers who prefer complimentary over matching pieces -- so we offer it all, thinking it would be quite boring if everyone wanted the same thing! And with the addition of over 30 local artists and an ever-expanding unique gift collection, we have something for almost everyone...and we don't really miss the Hermit Crabs!
Being located on the Outer Banks is, to my mind, a huge advantage! Beyond the beautiful scenery and being a vacation destination, our location on the Town of Duck gives us the opportunity to work with clients from as far away as Canada and Germany, visitors from up and down the East Coast and all the way west to California. Working with customers possessing different styles, needs, and desires. is akin to the proverbial box of chocolates (you never know what you'll get!)
With Beach Treasures Online, we are trying to bring that fun shopping experience to our customers near and far. We love seeing our old friends walk through the door. Groups of friends enjoying a ladies weekend...trying on our newest Ed Levin designs or looking for that perfect Spiny Oyster pendant to go with the ring purchased during the last visit! We love helping husbands and boyfriends select that special gift (satisfaction guaranteed and gift wrapping included). With the website we are trying to replicate that experience as best we can. We greatly appreciate your feedback on your online experience. We cannot fix a problem, if we do not know it exists. We love the positive comments too...and suggestions for how we can improve!
So, I'm going to spend this New Year -- 2020 -- celebrating our upcoming milestone. Please come in and join us -- we will have mini-celebrations building up to the main event!
